I Know…

This is Sylvan Beach, not Oneida, but it’s an iconic location that most will recognize. The photographer, Katie Chlad, is a local photographer.

FROM ONEIDA TO NYC AND BACK AGAIN: The Journey

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Oneida. I then moved to NYC. As I got older, I found myself coming home more often. During the pandemic, many city dwellers wanted to move away. What I noticed is that they wanted to find a place as similar to New York City as possible–and they wanted it to be as CLOSE to the city as possible–a maximum 2.5 hour drive away.

My big epiphany:

Oneida is not New York City and that’s a GOOD thing. It’s a 4 to 5 hour drive and it still feels like the country. You can buy a house with acres of land. You could open a retail shop in downtown Oneida. If you wanted to move somewhere completely different from NYC this might be the place. If you wanted to take a vacation somewhere completely different from NYC, this might be the place.

My goal with this website is to showcase some of the amazing things about Oneida. I’ll also be honest about some of the downsides I see too. To anyone reading who might be afraid of an influx of snobby New Yorkers, I don’t think that is going to happen. The drive is too far and the place is too different. It might be the right place for a handful of people who are looking for a different way of life, though…

The Opportunity:

As a long-time entrepreneur, I like to support small businesses and small Oneida businesses and owners whenever I can. Especially women small business owners. This site will showcase some local Oneida businesses in an effort to get them in front of a larger group of potential customers.

In the future:

Over the years, I’ve had friends in Oneida ask for my recommendations of places to see and things to do in NYC. I’ll be adding those recommendations to this site in the near future.
